Good Morning Doctor,
Academy projects are moving forward. The 2010 Masters project is being fine tuned as this letter is written. Outlines and procedures are being completed for the 2011 and 2012 projects. They soon will start moving off the drawing board into committee work. These last two initiatives have to do with certification and re-credentialing. Please note the 2009 project discussed later in the letter.
Our thanks to Dr. Mike Wiles of NWHSU for completion of MS 2006 and MS 2008 of the Masters outline. The final Masters product will have 36 credit hours. NWHSU has also indicated that they will be teaching the 2010 Diplomate syllabus. Once the student has completed this program, they will be eligible for the MSc: PM&R.
The 2009 project with FCER and DCConsult has become a reality. This work with our Coalition partners will introduce chiropractic orthopedics in a new arena. Enclosed in an excerpt from the letter I received from the Vice President of FCER, Dr. Ronald Evans…”On July 31 of this year, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER), solicited the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists for participation in providing content for the DCConsult website. The Academy Board response to this solicitation is overwhelmingly supportive.
FCER is deeply engaged in the formation and advancement of a new website, DCConsult. DCConsult is designed to meet the needs of the chiropractic profession. It provides doctors with timely and accurate information that will minimize risk and foster the best possible patient care. The content includes reviews of the scientific literature related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common clinical conditions. Other content includes patient handouts, articles from experts in the field, pre-defined Manual, Alternative and Natural Therapy Index System (MANTIS) searches, critical product reviews, and coding and billing information.
Special sections exist on DCConsult to address the needs of students, faculty, as well as national and international organizations. It is about the “special sections” that FCER addressed the Academy. FCER already placed the Academy as an organization of note on the front page of the DCConsult website. FCER is very aware that the Academy is a specialty organization in chiropractic orthopedics, holding special stature and high reputation in the profession. It is critically important that the Academy, along with the Coalition of Chiropractic Orthopedic organizations (the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists, the Council on Chiropractic Orthopedics, and the Texas Council on Chiropractic Orthopedics) become the expert orthopedics content contributors for DCConsult. No other entity is as equipped as the Academy, to take on this role. This is not a general, profession-wide invitation. FCER is making a specific invitation to the Academy for this significant academic activity regarding orthopedics. FCER strongly encourages Fellows of the Academy to log onto DCConsult.com and review existing content in the “conditions” tab. Along with a review of the material, please note that some of the submissions bear the logo or name of the primary contributing entity for the piece. This attribution could be for the Academy, the ACCO, CCO, or TCCO, etc. This is an opportunity not to be overlooked”. As you can see, the Orthopedic Coalition has been given a tremendous opportunity for orthopedics, the profession and most importantly our patients.
You will notice some changes in the e-Journal in the next issue. New topic areas have been added to the existing format. We have had contact with the largest medical out patient imaging group (12 states) to contribute articles to the journal on a quarterly basis. They have two DC’s on their staff, Drs. Lindsay Rowe and Tim Mick. I cannot thank the Editorial Board enough and its Editor for the hard work they have been doing to continually upgrade the journal.
A new Diplomate program in orthopedics at Palmer College in Davenport, IA will begin in the fall 2009. For those interested you may call 1-800-452-5032 or www.palmer.edu/ce.aspx. Classes will be accepted for maintenance of Academy re-credentialing.
Please mark your calendars for the ACCO symposium in San Antonio, TX May 8-10 2009. The topic of the conference is “The Failed Lower Back”. A fantastic “downtown” venue on the River Walk has been chosen. For those of you who have never been to San Antonio … the River Walk is fabulous with great restaurants, shops and sight seeing.
It has been brought to the attention of the Academy that there are doctors reporting that they are members of the Academy, but are not current dues paid members. They have been using FACO in their advertising, websites and letter heads. This is false advertising and inflating ones curriculum vitae. We are going to make every attempt to contact these doctors and ask them to join the Academy or cease and desist stating they are not active members or Fellows. If dues are not paid, the doctor loses the right to be called a Fellow or a member of the Academy.
