From the Desk of J. R. Brandt DC, MPS, FACO
President
Academy of Chiropractic

Good Afternoon Doctor,

The Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists is pleased to announce that we have 15 new Diplomates in chiropractic orthopedics. These doctors successful passed the Academy Board examination on October 1, 2011 at Palmer College in Davenport, IA. The successful candidates sitting the Board were from the following states:

  • Illinois
  • North Carolina
  • Minnesota
  • New Mexico
  • Iowa
  • Nebraska
  • West Virginia
  • Arizona
  • Kentucky

The 2012 examination date has not been set, but it will likely be late September or early October. Please watch the website for the exact date and location. The Academy is working on some possible format changes for the 2012 examination. The Academy has already received candidate interest for the upcoming examination.

The Programmatic and Item Writing Committees have been working on and developing a new process for writing questions, storing questions, sorting questions and many other testing procedures. We have been working on a new computer platform for this process and it’s not quite ready to be rolled out. It will make the item writers and item judges jobs so much easier and efficient. You haven’t heard much about this as it has been ongoing now in planning and development for over a year. The Item Writing Committee is doing its “due diligence” and will be calling a phone conference soon for the new writers and judges. The Academy has nearly 2000 questions in its MCQ pool and our goal is to expand that to 5000 questions.

The Academy is looking for those interested in contributing to or writing one (or more if you would like!) Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for the Board. We have in the neighborhood of 30 MCQ item writes and judges so we are good there. If you have an interest in helping send me an e-mail. (www.dcorthoacademy.com)

This is a call for papers at the Congress of Diplomates meeting in San Diego, California in conjunction with the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists (ACCO) conference. This is to be held at the Kona Kai Hotel in San Diego. The dates are April 26-28, 2012. You can check the website for details. Please notify Dr. Jerry Wildenauer at (www.dcorthoacademy.com) if you would like to present a case study or research. The cut off date is 02/15/12. This should be a 20-30 minute presentation. This is a very friendly audience of your contemporaries and colleagues.

The JACO had hits from 60 countries last month. Our website traffic has been increasing. Thanks to all of you who added information to your “mini website” in the membership list. I always check this first when I have a patient ask if I know someone in…. or if they are traveling and if I know someone in… So please update and if you have not added some material do so as it helps all of us looking for a doctor for our patients to see when in your location.

Don’t forget to check your patient pamphlets. There remains a price reduction for the “Member of the Academy” pamphlet. You can order off the website.

It has been brought to our attention that some doctors are using the FACO designation and are not members of the Academy. This is credential creep and can be construed as defrauding the public. To use FACO on any correspondence, advertising, website, curriculum vitae or court of law, you have to be current with your dues. We have contacted some doctors and they have rejoined. If you have any questions, you can contact us through the website. Service to our membership is important to the Academy.

May you fill your “Trick and Treat” bag next week…..

Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash…..General George S. Patton
