Academy President Letter
Volume 10, Number 1
January 2011

From the Desk of J. R. Brandt DC, MPS, FACO
President
Academy of Chiropractic

Good Morning Doctor,

My fingers have finally thawed after this past Friday. I had an early morning meeting and it was -17F with a wind chill of -40F. For a northern boy I have to admit that’s getting cold. It’s finally going to get up to around 30F today. I can now start wearing my short sleeves again….

The re-certification committee has been formed with Academy members from coast-to-coast and Canada. Dr. Loren Miller of Spokane, WA is the Chairman of the Committee. Dr. Steve Baron of Cantonsville, MD is the Chairman of the item writing. Dr. Baron has also accepted Chairman of the Diplomate item writing committee. Goals here are the same, the committees are procuring Diplomates across North America to assist in this project. Thank you to all who have volunteered to help. The level of sophistication in this process has been elevated. Should you get a call or an e-mail from Steve, Loren or myself asking to help in the process, I hope you will accept. One of the Academy mission statement points is to make this process transparent to Fellows and Diplomates. This is important in the validity and psychometric strength of the examination process.

This past fall our Lay Board member, Mr. Steve Wells, actually sat in one of the examination rooms as an observer to see the process. The Academy asked a practicing clinician to be an observer to represent the specialty. His comments were very supportive of the process. He was very pleased with the process and the fairness, yet thorough examination protocols. He was present from the pre-test meetings to the post examination meeting. We continually get incredibly positive comments about the Academy’s examination and the process the candidates experience. We have already received 3 calls from doctors who completed their Post Graduate studies a number of years ago that would like to sit the Board. Thank you to all of you who have talked to your friends and colleagues about the current process. Many of the new DACO’s are responsible for bringing in these new candidates. The next examination is at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA on October 1, 2011. This is a large class and space may be limited for this examination cycle. Letters of intent should be sent to Dr. Wildenauer as soon as possible to reserve a position.

The Texas Council of Chiropractic Orthopedists (TCCO) has been looking into providing a review class. Watch the website for dates, times and location.

The Academy sent its condolences this month to the University of Western States and the family of Dr. Richard Stonebrink. We also sent a memorial gift to be used to purchase orthopedic books for the university library in memory of Dr. Stonebrink. The memorial service is to be held January 29, 2011 at the University of Western States. All of us have been touched by his work with the orthopedic teaching syllabus.

I’m anxious to meet and talk with you April 28-30 at the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists convention in Las Vegas. This is going to be the best conference they have held in years. I know how hard they have worked and the speakers are top shelf. I will have a follow up communication with you soon about the presenters at the Congress of Diplomates.

I hope I will have some great news soon about the development and expansion of the Journal of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists (JACO). I’m grateful for the work the Editor-in-Chief and the Editor have done. When you get your link, please take some time and read the articles. The mentors have helped the new authors. Very positive comments. Consider putting a case together and sending it in to the journal. It’s easier than you think; the hardest thing to do is just start.

Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence……Helen Keller
