Academy e-letter
Volume 7, Number 11

From the Desk of:
Stephen D. Capps, DC. FACO
President, Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists

Fellows of the Academy,

It is my privilege as the new Academy President to work with a very energetic group of individuals. These are exciting times for the Academy. With the professional knowledge and expertise within our community we are looking forward to many accomplishments in the upcoming months.

The initial topics previously planned for this Presidents e-Letter have been preempted by a very special task. Please read this request for Fellow participation. It requires only a little team work from a few; not a lot of effort from one, as is the usual case.

I would like for you to know an Academy Board member that has taken on a special assignment and allow him to detail his request to the Academy membership as a whole, Dr Jim Demetrious:

James Demetrious, DC, FACO achieved his doctorate at New York Chiropractic College in 1986 and completed orthopedics training through National Chiropractic College. He currently serves the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedics on the Executive Committee as Secretary and as Original Articles Editor on behalf of the ACO e-Journal. Dr. Demetrious is a post-graduate faculty member on behalf of NYCC and teaches continuing education coursework nationally related to orthopedics and advanced diagnostic imaging. He has authored peer-reviewed journal articles that have appeared in Chiropractic and Osteopathy, JMPT, JNMS, Medsum and the e-JACO. He currently works in private practice in Wilmington, NC.

ENCLOSED LETTER FROM DR. DEMETRIOUS
Dear fellow Chiropractic Orthopedists, The Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists Board of Directors is pleased to announce a significant opportunity provided by the Foundation of Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER). The FCER has graciously requested the Academy’s assistance in providing evidence based original articles for inclusion in the new DCConsult web site’s catalog of clinical and scientific papers. This prospect represents a great honor and privilege.

The Academy wishes to meet this unique opportunity by actively participating in the development of this important resource. Chiropractic Orthopedists are amongst the most knowledgeable and dedicated physicians in chiropractic. We wish to harness the intellectual depth of the profession’s finest practitioners for the advancement of the entire profession.

I would like to provide you some background information related to this prospect. The FCER has developed a new international Evidence-Based Resource Center (EB-RC) that includes the web site, DCConsult (www.DCConsult.com). The new site provides you and others worldwide with condition-specific reviews ready for your immediate use. Each review includes:

Information about prevention, diagnosis and treatment options, and, A personalized patient handout discussing each proposed treatment, which can be printed and furnished to your patient.

Should individuals have a need to search for additional information from sources such as Medline and MANTIS™, they can do so while logged onto DCConsult. Many future enhancements to this site are in development to offer you including:

Up-to-date literature in areas that most interest you, and,
The opportunity for you to join interest groups and exchange information and communicate with experts the world over. The Academy has been asked to participate in providing high quality articles for inclusion on the DCConsult web site. This can include original manuscripts, previously published papers (with appropriate copyright consent), editorial article and text reviews, clinical position papers and more.

Ron Evans, DC, FACO currently serves as VP of the FCER and Chairman of the EB-RC. He suggests that the Academy initially focus on the following:

Review the topics covered in recent months or years for the indexed e-Journal of the Academy for topics that were already deemed timely and relevant, and,

Develop a topic list of approximately 24 conditions, that the Academy feels are pressing issues. At this time, the Academy and FCER need you! This is an incredible chance to participate in a meaningful scholarly endeavor. We need clinically strong, motivated and prolific authors to serve several functions:

To serve on an authors’/editorial committee.
To develop clinical conditions lists to add to the current DCConsult catalog of topics. To serve on teams of authors to write collaborative papers pertaining to specific clinical issues.
To serve as editors to review pre-review manuscripts submitted to DCConsult.
To assess and prepare our catalog of e-Journal articles for possible inclusion in the DCConsult web site.
To submit original manuscripts, those include Case Reports through RCTs.

I would like to personally request your participation in this task. If you are interested in partaking in this extremely important opportunity, please contact me directly. Please let me know how you would like to participate. This is a chance to really make a difference for our specialty and profession.

Thank you and best wishes,

James Demetrious, DC, FACO
