Good Morning Doctor,

This will probably be one of the longer e-letters that you have received from the Academy. So many things have been going on the last 30 days I have practically had to have a scorecard!

2010 Project First of all, I am pleased to inform the membership and orthopedists in general that the 2010 project has left the station:

Dear Dr. Brandt:

I am writing to confirm our interest in the Master of Science program developed by the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists 2010 Committee. As you know from discussions with members of our administration, we agree with the desire of the Academy to advance specialty training for doctors of chiropractic in orthopedics and rehabilitation to a graduate degree format and the curriculum developed by the Committee will serve as an essential resource as we proceed with our own program planning.

We are committed to pursuing the academic program the 2010 Committee has detailed in its report and I know that you understand the internal planning and external approval processes we must follow as we move forward over the next several months. Guided by the Committee report, the curriculum we design must be brought to our Board of Trustees for internal approval and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association since this would be a new educational offering of the University.
In addition to the critical help I will continue to receive from Dr. Mike Wiles, Dean of the College of Chiropractic and your Director of Graduate Education, Dr. Julia Bartlett, be assured that we will continue to ask for your advice and input as we bring this vision into reality here at Northwestern Health Sciences University.

Watch the next e-letter for more details regarding NWHSU. In the next 10 days we are having a second round of discussions with another institution. We will let you know as soon as possible on the status of this project.

The 2010 project could not have been accomplished without the Orthopedic Coalition; several academicians from various institutions, specialists practicing in different practice areas and the

memberships of the organizations that were called on to help on various tasks. The parent 2010 Committee is to be congratulated. It may have been lost in all of this, but the Coalition put together a job analysis for the chiropractic orthopedist. That hasn’t been done with such an extensive number of contributors in perhaps 30 years!

American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists (ACCO) Conference
The American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists (ACCO) conference in the San Diego area was again “excellent!” Good speakers were present. Dr. Weistroffer, a Navy flight surgeon from San Diego, gave an informative lecture on the current medical trends. Many complimentary statements about chiropractic were provided by Dr. Weistroffer. Supportive comments about chiropractic were also provided by Dr. Berger, a dermatologist. He discussed skin problems that he examines and will send them for chiropractic care because the tickle or itch they are experiencing is from nerve root irritation. Going in, I didn’t expect much value with this lecture. I was pleasantly surprised; it was informative and valuable for the orthopedist. Dr. Gary Tarola had a great lecture on assessing reasonable practice styles and malpractice situations. A fantastic paper was presented by Dr. Ron Evans at the Academy paper presentation on antibiotics such as Levaquin (levofloxacin family) or Cipro and the development of Tendinopathies. Please go to the March issue of the e-Journal as it is published in its entirety. Monday morning material was presented in many of the lectures.

New Examination Chairman and Associate Board member
Dr. Larry Swank has resigned from the Academy Board effective June 1, 2008. He had asked to leave back in January, but the Board felt he should remain until after the Diplomate examination on May 3rd in Houston. Dr. Jim Demetrious will take his Board position. Dr. Tom Wicks will be the new Examination Chairman and Associate Board member. Dr. Wicks has worked with Dr. Swank on the last couple of examinations. Tom has a PhD in addition to his D.A.C.O. Welcome, Tom. The Board has also added Dr. Chris Hammer from Milton, WI as a new Alternate Board member. Chris obtained his D.A.C.O. almost 2 years ago. Welcome, Chris.

The Board is grateful for Dr. Swank’s leadership and guidance. The reason for his leaving is actually a good reason. He is going to be heading up Palmer College’s new orthopedic classes that will begin later this year. The teaching will be along the lines of the 2010 syllabus. This will be the first institution to follow the outline of the new and updated syllabus. You will hear more on dates, places and times as it gets closer to launch.

The Coalition has expanded
The Texas Council of Chiropractic Orthopedists (TCCO) petitioned the Coalition to become a member. Dr. William Kowalski, TCCO President was on campus during the ACCO symposium. He attended the Coalition meetings. Officially, as of April 11, 2008, the TCCO is a full member of the Coalition. The Coalition has begun an outreach program to bring orthopedic groups together. It was the consensus opinion that the more orthopedists we have in the family, the stronger we will be and it will benefit all. We realize this is a big undertaking, but we have seen the value of teamwork to resolve orthopedic problems and developing a new direction. If you know groups of doctors, or other local, state, regional or national groups, please contact one of the coalition member organizations.

Academy is now tax exempt
The Academy has just been notified by the I.R.S. that we have met the criteria to become a tax exempt 503(c)(1) corporation. We had been working on that for several months. This will be very helpful as we move forward and into new projects.

2007 Distinguished Service Awards
Several doctors have received merit awards from the Academy. The following doctors have received the Distinguished Service Award for 2007.

  • Dr. Greg Norton – Chair of the re-credentialing committee. His committee works to review all the material submitted for re-credentialing. The number of Fellows voluntary re-credentialing has been increasing.
  • Dr. Jim Demetrious – Board member and instrumental in upgrading the e-Journal. He also is working as a mentor for doctors wishing to publish articles, but need some assistance with the process.
  • Dr. Bruce Gundersen – Editor-in-Chief of the e-Journal. He has worked tirelessly getting the journal indexed in the literature and this has resulted in a key to getting the journal in the MANTIS database.
  • Dr. Warren Jahn – He has done significant work as well with the e-Journal and has been active with membership referrals. He has expertise that the Academy has used on national chiropractic issues

The 2007 Distinguished Fellow Award went to Dr. Steve Capps. He has exemplified the meaning of dedication and focus. He has taken on far reaching projects for the Academy and the specialty in general. He has been actively contributing to building a better Academy, Coalition of Orthopedists and the specialty.

Carlsbad Initiative
The Orthopedic Coalition, comprised of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists, the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists, the Council on Chiropractic Orthopedics and the Texas Council of Chiropractic Orthopedists, drafted and launched the Carlsbad Initiative during meetings held at the recent ACCO conference, April 10-13, 2008 in Carlsbad, California. The Carlsbad initiative represents the recognition by the Coalition of the concerns expressed by academic institutions and regulatory authorities regarding accountability issues surrounding chiropractic specialization and specialty certification. The Carlsbad Initiative is equivalent to policies and actions set in motion by such august entities as the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, the Jackson Hole Group and the Pew Consortium.

Note from the President
I am ending my term as President of the Academy on December 31, 2008. I will remain after that date to fulfill the remainder of my term on the Academy Board. The Carlsbad Initiative will need many people to move this course of action forward. The process is underway to fill the remainder of the President’s term. I want to thank the Board — they are a group of hard working Chiropractic Orthopedists — and our lay Board member for their unselfish time, talents and energy to guide and encourage me through this journey that began nearly seven years ago with the Academy. There are many in the specialty and the Orthopedic Coalition family that have been encouraging, supportive and helpful to me in so many ways. I am eternally grateful for all you have done. THANK YOU!
